There are things we all wish we could do differently. If I could start my education over again, I'd go into the visual arts of some sort. When I started university, forever ago, I began as a music major and switched to geography. I had a fantastic prof that made human geography fascinating. That hasn't died, but my arty side is desperately trying to hold her head above water.
About 5 years ago I learned to SCUBA dive. This was an amazing experience and I couldn't get enough of it, even in our cold Pacific Northwest waters. This awakened me in directions I never expected. I became focussed on fitness and photography. A year ago, I pushed the envelope by taking on the PNW Diver magazine. With the help of a friend, Talia, I redesigned the magazine into a contemporary, clean publication. In doing so, I discovered that I really like graphic work.
Now connect that with my career as a teacher. I love designing curriculum. I'm told I'm good at it. With the BC Ministery of Education mandating curriculum changes that are sending teachers in panic, I thought I could get on the bandwagon. Time to create curriculum for sale. A grand thought, but I need both art skills and graphic design skills.
That leads me to some changes. I am going to try to reclaim my drawing skills and develop my graphic design skills. I feel like going back to school is not an option right now, so I'll self learn. With the help of the internet, some books I have already and the vast publications available on issuu.com, I'll get started.
For now, I need to get my drawing skills up. So I'll be following two books: You Can Draw In 30 Days by Mark Kistler and One Drawing A Day by Veronica Lawlor. I also need to revamp this website and create a modern logo for Celtic Cow. I was kept awake with ideas last night. I'll try to sketch those out.
So this is my journey. Follow along if you like. Post comments and critiques – that will help me grow.
